- Kodava Heritage and Customs: A Glimpse into the Past
The Kodava community in Coorg has a distinct identity, one that has been shaped by its heritage, customs, and values over the years. Unlike other communities in India, the Kodavas have never been governed by a caste system. They have their own language—Kodava Takk—and their own traditions, including the ceremonial wearing of the ‘kupya’ (a traditional dagger), a symbol of their warrior lineage.
Kodava weddings are one of the most fascinating aspects of this community’s customs. The wedding rituals are unique, with celebrations that can last several days. Traditional Kodava dances, such as the ‘Kodava dance’, are performed during these ceremonies, bringing the community together in joyous harmony.
